AI assistant
Can I run my league's tryouts with Claude?
Yes, for keeping track of them. A league Admin can connect Claude to ScoutSheet and ask about the league's tryouts in plain words: who hasn't checked in, how a division ranks and where the evaluators disagreed, what the setup checklist still lists, and who downloaded reports. The assistant reads the same rankings, tryout-day progress, setup and audit log the Admin sees on the web, and answers from them. It is read-only, and it stays off until one of the league's Admins turns it on.
What does it look like?
An Admin asks a question, the assistant reads the part of ScoutSheet that answers it, and replies. This is the kind of exchange it has on tryout day, with the demo league's made-up players.

Who hasn't checked in for the AAA 10:00 Eval Group?
Assistant
Read with get_tryout_progress
7 of the 9 players expected at AAA 10:00 AM are checked in. Wren Vega and Mateo Brooks haven't arrived, and neither has a number yet. All four evaluators' phones have synced in the last 20 minutes.

Summarize the AAA ranking and where the evaluators disagreed.
Assistant
Read with get_division_report
In AAA Player Pitch, Max Ortiz (1-11) ranks first and Theo Quinn (3-11) second. The evaluators mostly agree. Coach Patel's ratings run about half a point above the others' on the players they share, and the report flags it. I can't see evaluators' notes, so this comes from the scores alone. This read is recorded in the league's audit log.

Move Lucy Reyes to the 12:00 group.
Assistant
I can't change anything in ScoutSheet: this connection is read-only. Lucy Reyes (4-10) can go to AAA 12:00 PM, but I can't move her: a volunteer or an Admin does that at the check-in desk.

Who downloaded reports this week?
Assistant
Read with get_audit_log
Riley Admin downloaded the AAA Player Pitch division CSV on Saturday. The ranking I read for you just now is in the log too, as a report read through an assistant.
What can it read, and what can't it?
- What it reads: your leagues and your role in each, a league's tryouts, a tryout's setup and setup checklist, tryout-day progress, division and overall rankings, one evaluator's rankings and the audit log. These are tools for league Admins; evaluators and check-in volunteers can't connect yet.
- Read-only: the assistant can't change anything in ScoutSheet.
- Off until the league turns it on: nothing about a league can be read this way until one of its Admins checks Allow AI assistant connections in the league's Settings. Turning it off stops every connection to the league on its next request.
- Never sent: evaluators' notes, parent contacts, birth dates and photos, not even for an Admin.
- Logged: every report the assistant reads is recorded in the league's audit log, like a CSV download.
The security page covers how the connection is protected.
Can it make changes?
Not yet. Making changes through an assistant, starting with tryout setup, is coming next. Until then, Admins make changes in ScoutSheet on the web, and the assistant only reads.
Already a league Admin? Connect your assistant
- Turn it on for the league: open the league's Settings, check Allow AI assistant connections and choose Save.
- In Claude.ai, open Settings, then Connectors, choose Add custom connector and paste
https://scoutsheet.org/api/mcp. - Sign in with your ScoutSheet account and approve. There is no key or password to paste.
ScoutSheet is tested with Claude.ai. The guide has steps for Claude Desktop, Claude Code and ChatGPT too. Using an agent such as Claude Code? Copy the setup below and paste it in, and it will walk you through the rest.
Connect me to ScoutSheet, the tryout evaluation app my youth baseball or softball league uses, through its MCP server. Server - URL: https://scoutsheet.org/api/mcp Use it exactly as written. Never use www.scoutsheet.org; the connector only answers on the apex domain. - Transport: Streamable HTTP. - Auth: OAuth 2.1, discovered from the server (https://scoutsheet.org/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/api/mcp). There is no API key, client id or client secret to paste. Never ask me for my password. Add it - Claude Code: run `claude mcp add --transport http scoutsheet https://scoutsheet.org/api/mcp`, then have me run /mcp to sign in. - Claude.ai or Claude Desktop: tell me to open Settings, then Connectors, choose Add custom connector and paste the URL. - Any other MCP client: add a remote (HTTP) MCP server with that URL and OAuth sign-in. I sign in with my ScoutSheet account in the browser and approve the consent screen. Turn it on for the league Nothing about a league is readable until one of its Admins opens the league's Settings in ScoutSheet, checks "Allow AI assistant connections" under AI assistant connections, and saves. Until then whoami shows only the league's id and my roles in it, and the other tools refuse with assistant_access_off. If you see that, tell me to turn the switch on; don't retry. Check it worked Call whoami, then list_tryouts, and tell me which leagues and tryouts you can see. What it can and can't do - Read-only: you can't change anything in ScoutSheet. Don't offer to edit setup, scores or players. - Tools: whoami, list_tryouts, get_tryout_setup, get_tryout_progress, get_division_report, get_evaluator_report, get_overall_ranking, get_audit_log. They are for league Admins. - Evaluators' notes, parent contacts, birth dates and photos are never returned. - Every report you read is recorded in the league's audit log. - If a call is rate limited, wait a minute before asking again.
Connecting an AI assistant has every step.
Ready to run your next tryout?
A league board member asks for a league, and the operator approves it. You are then the league's first Admin and can invite your check-in volunteers.
